Since no one has ever really cared about George Lucas' somewhat dismal first foray into sci-fi, he's come to realize that he originally envisioned it as having many more visual effects, some of which he has now added. Sadly, while this 1984-type of story might look a lot better, no one will really care, because it's never going to have Jawas or lightsaber battles. Unless of course, it now does.
