More Info:
The third solo album from this former member of MK Ultra. An enormously gifted songwriter and musician based in San Francisco, Life And Death of An American Fourtracker is his third and best solo album. Both beautiful and unique, Fourtracker boasts great guest appearances by Kori Gardner (Mates of State), Jim Eno (Spoon), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Bill Swan (Beulah) and other lesser-known but equally luminous players.Reviews:
Bay Area singer/ songwriter John Vanderslice comes from the same erudite poptradition as the Elephant 6 collective. He's a clever wordsmith who writesstraight from the heart, and he favors elegant, right-brain arrangements thatrecall Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, 1970s prog-rock, Pet Sounds and everythingin between. At this point, Vanderslice is known as much for his elaborate pranksand his ownership stake in San Francisco's Tiny Telephone recording studioas he is for his ridiculously prolific songwriting output. And while Vanderslice'slatest collection of songs comes without an attached hoax or highbrow thematicconcept, Life and Death of an American Fourtracker isn't too muchof a musical departure from the gut-wrenching pop of his last two solo records. As it should be, really: "Greyhound" and "Me and My 424"(complete with full-blown strings and backing vocals by Death Cab for Cutie'sBen Gibbard) represent the most effective synthesis of his diverse influencesto date, and the rest of the record falls just a hair short of brilliant.back to top
