Dizzy Gillespie LIVE IN VEGAS 1963 Volume 2. The group featured on this album first began to form when saxophonist Leo Wright joined Gillespie in 1959 and Lalo Schifrin was hired as his pianist the following year. Bassist Chris White and drummer Rudy Collins became members of the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet in 1962. By 1963 the quintet was awesome! - Opening selection, Schifrin's 'Long Long Summer' features heated and modern phrases from Gillespie. 'Morning Of The Carnival' is from the 1959 film Black Orpheus. 'Kush' hints strongly at African rhythms and Asian harmonies and is nearly 18 minutes long. - The light-hearted 'School Days' Dizzy does a very effective job with his own exuberant vocalizing, and on 'Ooh- Shoo-Be-Doo-Be' Dizzy is joyful throughout! - With incredible live stereo sound, and liner notes by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow, this album does not disappoint! - Produced by Thomas Gramuglia and John Jungklaus. Recorded at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
