Reviews:

''Cee-Lo Green and His Perfect Imperfections'' is the debut solo album of former Goodie Mob rapper Cee-Lo. The album features guest appearances from Jahalla, Kirkland Underground, fellow Dungeon Family rappers Big Gipp and Backbone, and John Popper of Blues Traveler fame. - Wikipedia

The Goodie Mob’s Thomas “Cee-Lo” Callaway admits readily thatthe last Goodie album, World Party, was a flop, both commercially andideologically. While the crew had always been known for their political andsocial wisdom, and to boot, a gospel and funk influenced musical gift, WorldParty showed a group in decline.

As a result, Cee-Lo was restless. His good friends in Outkast had been gettingstranger and stranger, and they’d only been getting more successful. Whynot try a little bit of that style-crashing on for size? The result, this ambitioussolo debut, showcases as many limitations as it does triumphs. They’reall captured in the first single, “Closet Freak.” It’s a viciousRick James-style shimmy, and in the video, Cee-Lo embraces his softer side, sporting a feather boa and jiggling mightily. It’s funky, but essentiallya one-trick act. While Outkast work through a dozen forms at a time and masterthem all, Cee-Lo’s just hanging on by a thread. On “El Dorado Sunrise(Super Chicken),” Cee-Lo puts his churchified vocals to the test, but themusic is too rigid to match it. Cee-Lo does plenty of things right. When heraps, he overachieves, as on “One for the Road” and “Big OleWords (Damn).” And when he sings—as in saaaaangs—it’s atreasure, making songs like “Young Man” reverberate with uncommonfervor. When he was with Goodie Mob, Cee-Lo set himself apart as the group’smoral and musical center. Of the crew, he’s the one who’ll somedaydeliver a solo album to stun the world. But for now, when Cee-Lo tries to gethis experimentation on, he just doesn’t have that special stank. Betterluck next time.
