More Info:

This CD opens with the first date without Al Sears. Although Flip Philipps and Ben Webster sat in on the studio dates, Hodges used Babe Clarke and John Coltrane when on the road. "This Love Of Mine" also includes vocals by Al Hibbler, (and the varied instrumentals on this CD are excellent throughout). Trummy Young's "Through For The Night" is a wonderful tune that was first recorded in early 1944 by an all-star combo under Cozy Cole's leadership. The present version does not pale in comparison and swings like mad - despite the relaxed tempo. The reflective mood of "Come Sunday," recorded immediately after, is a stark contrast. The extended "Johnny's Blues" proves a free-for-all riff tune that allows everyone to stretch himself.
