Adapted from Margaret Atwood's acclaimed novel, the 1990 dystopian film The Handmaid's Tale-directed by Volker Schlöndorff (The Tin Drum) with a screenplay by Harold Pinter-portrays a chilling near-future where widespread infertility caused by environmental devastation has transformed society. In the theocratic Republic of Gilead, ruled by authoritarian fundamentalists, fertile women are forced into servitude as "handmaids" for the ruling elite. After losing her family, the protagonist Kate is assigned to the household of Commander Fred, where clandestine relationships and unexpected tenderness kindle her growing hunger for freedom. The film features a striking score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, whose work spans from YMO to renowned film compositions; originally issued as an extended suite during the early days of the CD era, the soundtrack now returns in a newly remastered edition.
