About This Release
Ryuichi Sakamoto's soundtrack for François Girard's 2007 film is a beautifully evocative musical map, perfectly complementing the protagonist's journey across diverse locales, from Europe to Egypt, Russia, and Japan. The score is rich in texture, highlighted by the melancholic strings and majestic horns of "First Trip to Japan" and the desolate, cold reverberations of the piano piece "Snowy Village," which seems to inherit the spirit of the late Glenn Gould. Sakamoto expertly uses instrumental color, such as the scraping violin against arpeggiated piano in "The Girl," to convey the exotic beauty of the East, while skillfully adapting journey themes to reflect the evolving narrative and direction of time throughout the film.
