Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz has enjoyed continuous success since it's premiere in June 1821 and rapidly became one of the models for German Romantic opera. In accordance with a tradition that goes back to Mozart's time and which was still very much alive during Weber's lifetime, many transcriptions were made either of the entire work or of extracts from it. The most important of these was made by Karl Flachs, seemingly as early as 1822, and was published in 1825. It contains an extensive selection of the work's principal numbers, including the overture and the most important arias and choruses.
