Neurosis don't stray from their established epic-forging path one bit on this inspired one-off with Jarboe, the former Swans vocalist who's been collaborating with artists ranging from Brian Lustmord to Low's Alan Sparhawk as of late. The quintet let their appetite for atmosphere inform much of the project's instrumental core, though, generally eschewing multiple-movement structures in favor of the sort of slow, careful development that defined Swans' approach to composition. The chameleonic Jarboe leaves her past dead and buried, transforming dialect, inflection, and even the basic sound of her voice to accommodate personae ranging from the demented backwoods soothsayer of "Within" to "Erase"'s undead PJ Harvey. Neurosis have long owed Swans a debt of influence. Neurosis & Jarboe makes for damn sweet payback.
