There are dozens of DJ-mix series out there, but a few of them have even managedto sneak a gimmick or two into them in order to help us differentiate them fromone another. In the case of Kinetic’s downtempo series Another LateNight, the big-name DJs/producers who put each title together are askedto contribute an instrumental remake of a favorite song to the disc. Needlessto say, this element is typically the weakest part of each volume, a rule thatis not broken with Zero 7’s indolent remake of reggae singer Johnny Osbourne’s“Truth & Rights.” You might fear a whole disc of such sub-Airsquishiness (that’s what Zero 7’s album, Simple Things delivers,after all), and Shawn Lee, Jim O’Rourke and Joy Zipper deliver. But mostof the rest is gratifyingly tough, with sharp selections from Quasimoto, theCinematic Orchestra, Roots Manuva, Herbert (remixing Serge Gainsbourg) and theStylistics.
