Gonzalo Rubalcaba's great passion ("Mi Gran Pasion") is Cuban "danzon rhythm", which was invented in 1879 by clarinetist Miguel Faflde and rhythmically perfected by Jose Urfe. On this recording, Gonzalo has masterfully interwoven the three elements of his artistic personality: danzon, jazz and classical music. The historical significance of this recording is quite clear. These danzon experiments are comparable with what Astor Piazzolla and Paco de Lucia have done for tango and flamenco.
