1961 was an exciting time for six teenagers from the Jersey Shore. Asbury Park was the home base for Ray and the Darchaes. They were Ray Dahrouge, Sam Siciliano, Louie Scalpati, Dennis Testa, Sal Capolongo and Tony Juliano. After months of rehearsal and through the efforts, the song writing, versatile crystal clear singing and drive of their lead singer Ray Dahrouge, they landed a record deal with Al Browne, owner of Aljon Records in Brooklyn, NY. The two songs penned by Ray were 'Little Girl So Fine' b/w 'Carol'. The group stayed together for a number of years singing and recording songs that Ray had written by himself or co-written with Sam Siciliano. Through the years Sam's younger brother Patsy would join the group and replace whatever member was missing. He was affectionately dubbed 'utility man'. Sal passed away a number of years ago and Tony could not be reached for the most recent recordings. Another member of the group who also recorded and performed on stage during personal appearances was Barry Rufus Edwards. He also has passed away. Ray, Sam and Patsy were honored in Asbury Park, NJ as three of the 'Creators of S.O.A.P.' The 'Sound of Asbury Park', along with performers like Bruce Springsteen, SouthSide Johnny, Lenny Welch, Doc Holiday and others. Their names appear on a monument (plaque) on the Boardwalk in front of the Convention Center. After attempts to secure another contract with the group, Ray decided to continue chasing his life's dream of singing, writing and producing. Ray accomplished just that. His talent was quickly recognized and he recorded for Polydor, Bell, Blendingwell/Epic and others. His songs were, and still are, recorded by some of the heavyweights in the business. Ray wrote 10 songs on Lenny Welch's lastest album, plus Englebert Humperdinck, Helen Ready, The Manhattans, The Moments (Ray, Goodman and Brown), Doug Stone, LTD Limited/Featuring Jeffery Osborne and a host of others. On this album are some of the songs the group recorded in the early and mid- 60's. They were reserrected by PJ Noce, well known music historian and collector. The group recently got back together and recorded two new originals written by Ray 'Christmas on the Jersy Shore' and 'From the Heart of Asbury Park'. All original members, Ray Dahrouge (lead), Sam Siciliano (bass), Patsy Siciliano, Louie Scalpati and Dennis Testa. Listen and enjoy the sound of 'Ray and the Darchaes'.
