About This Release
For this our first full-length project, we selected some of our current favorite old-time tunes and songs, then recorded them live one weekend in June 2012. Some of the tunes are just plain fun to hear--or to play--Shel's version of 'Chinquapin Pie' is mighty tasty, and the whole band has fun with tunes like 'Featherbed,' 'Dance Around Molly,' and Doc Roberts' 'Shortenin' Bread.' When we play a live dance, tunes like 'Grubb Springs' or the medley of 'Paddy on the Railroad' and 'Bay of Fundy' usually gets the dancers quite worked up. But Tony and Marge's quest for great old songs to sing really distinguishes the Tater Patch sound. Songs like 'Lazy John,' 'Rabbit in the Peapatch,' and 'Going Back to Dixie' appeal to many different listeners and are frequently requested by our audiences. On this project, check out their duet of the old spiritual 'Prodigal Son.' Ray Alden was right: this is a great song for Tony and Marge to sing. Tater Patch: Judy Hough-Goldstein, fiddle; Marge Sume, fiddle, banjo uke, vocals; Shel Sandler, banjo; Tony Sume, guitar, vocals; Richard Gordon, bass.
